Part 11: My New Master and My New Enemy

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8

Alako woke up the next morning and stretched his arms as he felt the warmth of the sun on his face.  A few senzu means the day before had fixed him up quite well after that fight on Namek.  Those things were really a miracle.  He would have to stop bringing them along on missions for the Supreme Kai.  He through off his blanket and pulled on his training cloths.  He still had training with Krillin, but, like Piccolo, he had a feeling he would soon out grow him as well.  Which meant, he needed to look for another teacher.  He wondered if, perhaps, he should search out that magician from heaven, that one who had visited him once in his past life.  No doubt, the Supreme Kai was far better then his first instructor.  When he was this age in his old life his magic was no limited to a few parlor trick transformations and some inefficient mixing with his ki for more flash than effect.  The Supreme Kai of time had helped him master transformations, and may other things, and helped him control and use his magic powers far more efficiently.  However, he was sure even she would agree that magician, who had only ever taught him one thing, and shown him so much more to aspire too, was a far better magician than she was.  Well, even if he looked he could probably never come across that one again.  Not unless the Kai agreed to send him back in time.  Thinking of the Kai he remembered he would have to go and ask her more about Towa and Mira later.  Right now, he had other things to do.  Stepping out of his apartment and leaping into the air. To fly into TokiToki and into the business district to meet with Krillin.  When he came into land the first thing he noticed was something far more interesting than a short Buddhist, a tall blond.
“Hey Alako, feeling any better after your mission.”  Krillin said in that upbeat voice he always spoke in.
“Yea, senzu beans are really something.”
“He nodded, yea, they are something.”  Alako had kept glancing at the blonde and took the opportunity to introduce himself.
“Hi, I’m Alako.  I don’t think I got your name.”
“Eighteen.”  She said and held out her hand.  He accepted it.
“My pleasure to meet you.  Are you one of Krillin’s friends?”
"She’s my wife.”  Krillin said.  Alako managed to hide it but inwardly his jaw was dropping.  Well, he almost hid it.  He started in surprise and looked at him.

“Really?”  He didn’t know the little guy had it in him.
“Yea?”  He said, wrinkling his brow.  “Why?”
“I well.”  He thought up an excuse quickly.  “I thought you were a monk or a priest.  I assumed you were celibate.”
He must have accepted that answer because his smile returned, and he chuckled.  “Nope, just the way I like my hair.  Eighteen asked to tag along.  She heard about TokiToki and wanted to take a look at it herself.”
“O, well let’s make this season quick then so I don’t keep you guys.”
“Right.”  Krillin took off, making for the patrol station where they could teleport to different places in time, Alako rose into the air to follow him, and to his surprise so did Eighteen.
“You know a few tricks of your own.”
    “A few.”  She said.
"Eighteen.  Is that a nick name?”
    “No, I’m an android.”
    “Android?”  They landed.
“I’ll explain later.”  They stepped up into one of the transfer booths and above them a ring portal let out a pop of energy and activated.  They trio flew up and through the portal and came out on a grassy plane somewhere on earth.  Eighteen went over to a convenient boulder and perched on top of it with one knee over the other watching them.

“With all respect Krillin, I hope you don’t expect me to go easy this time because your girl is here.”  He flashed a grin.  “Don’t worry, I won’t be either.”  The two moved in a blur and started to crash in the ground and on the air.

“Have you been practicing the Destructo Disk?”  Alako blocked a punch and turned down, elbowing him in the gut, but before he could get out of their he was elbowed on the head and sent down, but he recovered before he reached the ground.

“Of course.” He said, shaking the stars out of his eyes.  He didn’t need to get too cocky.  “In fact, I’ve even improved it.”
“Really?” Krillin rushed in and Alako rushed back, before suddenly vanishing.  It was a mirage, which Krilin discovered as Alako’s foot buried itself in his back and sent Krillin flying into the grassy field, he would have recovered, if Alako had let him.  Alako held out his open hand with his palm flat to the sky as his ki began to swirl and concentrate into a flat disk of golden light that moved with an almost audible hum in the air before dark green began to wheel along it’s edge, then he tossed it.  It wasn’t going fast enough to hit Krillin and he was out of the way before it cut into the ground and burst with an electric pop, sending crackles of green energy flashing just the moment after the disk had died.
“That’s some awfully strange ki you’ve got Alako.  What is it?”
“It’s magic.”  He said as he landed.  “I mix it with my energy and then cap the edge of the disk, it will give you quite the shock if you're hit by it.”
“You can do that now.”  He shook his head in amazement.  “I hate to admit it but I don’t think there is anything else you can learn from me.  With this magic thing you’ve just gone way over my head, uh, no pun intended.”
“Maybe I could try him.”  They both looked to Eighteen, the small blond was looking at him with an analytical gaze and then pushed a lock of hair from her face.  “If your done training him Krillin maybe I could take over, you said it’s important work and maybe I can lend a hand.”
“You’re a fighter.”  She stood up and as her legs went straight she leaped and flew in an arch over the dozen meters between them before she gently settled down next to them.
“You could say that.”  Krillin chuckled and he was starting to gather that assuming Eighteen was just a pretty face was one of the bigger mistakes he had made since coming to TokiToki.  He started to
Stretch his arms and his shoulders.  “Well, you two seem to know something I don’t.  So, I would love to see what you’ve got.”

“Good luck Alako.”  Krillin said in parting as he flew off the battle field and Eighteen readied herself.

“Are you ready?”  He nodded.  Then the ground at her feet turned into a dust cloud and Alako blocked her first attack, out of instinct more than thought, and winced at the pain.  This girl hit like an iron rod even if she didn’t connect properly.  He changed tactics and packed off, firing off a volley of energy blasts that she avoided, deflected, or just shrugged off.  Thinking fast as she struck out he transmitted himself and reappeared right behind her, spinning and kicking her so hard she flew into the ground and smashed into a crater.  He landed near the crater and cautiously looked in.  As he did she picked herself up, and her face became cross as she pulled off her ruined jacket.  Then she dashed forward so fast he could barely blink and rammed her iron fist into his face he flew through the air, flipping end to end and recovered just in time to blocker her next attack and blast her in the face with his energy.hen   Then, he felt something ram into him and pain radiate up such as he had never felt before, as her iron hard ankle berried itself as far up between his legs as was possible.  The air woudln't go into his lungs and debilitating pain burning through his body he fell out of the sky and hit the ground  before groaning and curled into a ball.
“Krilin,” He groaned in a low, hoarse voice, “Senzu, senzu bean now.”
Krillin looked down to him with a pitying look.  “I don’t think those will help.”  Eighteen lighted herself on the ground beside him and looked down at Alako without any pity.  “You’re not bad, in fact your pretty good.  I can give you some pointers if you want.”
“Can I stop writhing in pain first.” He said and coughed and curled tighter into a ball.  If the eternal dragon had offered him immortality, or morphine he would be taking the morphine.
Once Alako had finally recovered enough he accepted her offer to train he did, but not today, he would be walking with an odd gate for hours after that and regardless he still had to go see the Supreme Kai to receive more instruction in the use of his magic, which was quickly proving to being an even more valuable power than his Ki in his battles.  His ki reserve was large and his potential was great.  He was probably one of the greatest warriors his race ever produced, if not the greatest. Still, in a universe with Namek's and Saiyans, and Androids, and who knew what else, it was obvious his ki alone wasn't enough.

Alako made her wonder how many great magicans had been born who had just never had the chance to realize their potential.  She had not been teaching Alako more than a few weeks and she was already wondering how much more she could teach him.  Perhaps all that he had learned in his past life had stuck with him in a subconscious way, and made him some sort of savant, or maybe he was just a savant already.  He had master magic very quickly, and he had learned to combine ki and magic on the spot while she couched him through it.  No one could just do that.  A few, perhaps three or four, creatures naturally had magic and mix it with their ki. Angels, Majin like Buu, the Kai’s and the denizens of the Demon Realm.  For everyone else it was usually impossible.  Human’s were generally not predisposed to magic to begin with and few could use it in anything like how Alako could.  She wondered if he was truly just a human or was he something more.  Did he have divine heritage of some sort, or maybe...
    “Something wrong Supreme Kai?”
She was pulled from her thinking “Just call me Chorona, Supreme Kai sounds stilted.”
“I think you have more to teach me then you have been.”  He was getting smart quick to.  Too smart for his own good she worried.
She crossed her arms and cased her scrutinizing eyes on him.  “Maybe, but I am not sure what you are ready for yet.  Magic is a very powerful too Alako, as you know.  Since you can mix it with your ki it becomes even more powerful.  You must learn to control what you already have before I help you get more.”
“Your absolutely right.  But if I have to keep facing enemies like Frieza, or if I’m right you intend me to face even greater enemies then him.  In that case I will need more power then I have, and I don’t think we have time to waist.”  Unfortunately, he was probably right.
“I’m still the one teaching, so I’ll still teach you at my pace.”
He nodded his agreement.  I think I need healing magic, or stamina magic, something that will help keep me in the fight longer.  I may have power but I’m still just human my body can only take so much of a pounding right now and I need a way to keep myself in there.”
“You know that won’t help you unlock your potential any quicker.  Only hard work and patience can get you that.”
    “Being dead won't either.”
“Fine.  Whatever it takes.”  He had changed a little too since his fight with Frieze.  Sure, he was still arrogant, narcissistic, and self-assured to the extreme at times, but he was growing up.  It was moment like right now, when he suddenly took things so seriously and looked at things so seriously that she wondered if he might again be worth the title of Equal of Heaven.

Alako was training with Door and Ice, trying to push them harder and farther.  It was almost comically how quickly the tables had turned.  His friends were still powerful and great warriors to, undoubtedly some of the greatest warriors their races had ever produced.  But now he was the one pushing them to be better, pushing them to be the best.  Since his fight with Frieza he had felt like he had to push them more and more.  He remembered how Ice had responded to the idea of having to fight Frieza.  Flippant or not, her response told him that he was going to be facing more and more powerful opponents.  Maybe he wouldn’t be getting strong enough fast enough to face them, but even if he did, if his friends didn’t then one day they might be squashed like insects before he could do anything.
Door and Ice came in at the same time he blocked, and the block went straight into a strike to the nose and, BLAH!  They moved just in time to avoid the ki blast that would have gone to their face.
“Nice job you guys, you’re getting faster.”
“If the other option is to take that to the face, you didn’t leave us much choice.”  Said Door, and Alako grinned in satisfaction.
“I notice that ki wasn’t green.”  Ice said then she started to descend.  “I was watching that battle with Frieza.  When you throw in your magic your ki power is phenomenal.
“That’s true.”  Alako said, and then landed.  “But magic works much differently than ki.  But magic works differently from ki, and I can't get better at using one if I just rely on the other too boost my power all the time.”
Especially with Towa and Mira watching, Ice though.  Alako was smart enough to see that he was best off not revealing the full extent of his magic to those two until it was necessary.  they were crafty and had too many tricks up their slevees.
    "So how does magic work."
"It's less like a reserve of ki and more like a wall.  You can use magic infinitely, but you can only use it to a point."
"Are you saying your potentially omnipotent?"  Door asked skeptically.
“No Think of it this way.  I can use magic to supplement my ki, maybe I can use it to make it twice as strong.  But, I can’t do any more.  I am always powerful enough to make it twice as strong.  But I can’t go any higher unless I raise my cap.  Magic you always operate on your limit.  So imagine it as if you were born as powerful as Frieza, but you could never get any stronger.  You can increase your magical potential but only through incredibly effort, training, and patience, and just like ki if your body is old broken then it's harder to tap into magic.  That it why even as an old man I could defeat a Saiyan like Raditz, but why I still took a beating do it.”
“Your ki and your magic might have been weak, but together they were powerful."

“Exactly, there’s limits though.  Magic isn’t a substitute for Ki after all.  It’s more of a support tool.  I used to think it was better to use it to boost your abilities rather then your ki, now I'm not as sure."   Suddenly electricity crackled in the back of his mind.  “Somethings up at the time nest? Put your hands on my shoulders, I learned a new trick I want to show off.”  They did, and suddenly they were enveloped in green tinted neon light.  It enveloped them, and then suddenly they were outside the time nest.
“That was just like time travel?”
“It was, I sort of borrowed the residual magic of the city to make a time jump.”
“You must be advancing quickly.”  They began to step through the portal into the Time Nest.
“I have, I surprise even myself.”

The scene played out across the scroll.  Trunks walking through ruined streets as if looking for something then him suddenly stopping, pulling his sword and powering up to super Saiyan.  Two warriors wreathed in Towa’s dark power stepped in and pounced.  Trunks put up a fight, but his efforts were useless as he was thrown around, every bow blocked or returned exchanged for three more.  It didn’t look like he was holding out well.  One of those warriors battling Trunks he actually knew.  It was Eighteen.
“Those warriors are the Androids Seventeen and Eighteen,” said a solemn Trunks, “They are far stronger than even Frieza.  They may be too strong for you to face right now.”
“You brought me here because time was being damaged right.  I’m guessing that things are going to get a lot worse if I don’t try right?”
Chronoa nodded and rolled up the scroll before handing it to him.  “Besides.”  He said as the light began to surround him.  “You can just pull me out and we can try again if I’m not ready right?”  Chrona smiled softly but didn’t say anything.  “Hey, right?”  he bleated.  But it was too late as he vanished.

Next Time: “Well, I was always told to never hit a woman, but for you I’ll make an exception.”  “Chauvinist.”  “Hey, what in the world is that thing?”

He survived his last battle, but, will he the next?
